Spiritual Narrative - Annual Exhibition Between China and the Portuguese-Speaking Countries
Inspired by a dialogue between two 16th century visionaries — the Portuguese Fernão Mendes Pinto and the Chinese Xu Xiake — this exhibition explores the concept of the inner journey.
In its deepest sense, every journey is a return. It is a pilgrimage in search of a centre that has always existed within us. Spiritual Narrative portrays these inner journeys, examining how exploration of the physical world becomes an inevitable spiritual metaphor for self-discovery and redemption.
Rooted in this fundamental duality, the exhibition presents a constellation of works by artists from diverse backgrounds. Here, art is conceived as a spiritual vessel, carrying the soul’s impressions across time. Visible landscapes — seas, mountains, and cities — serve merely as points of departure for a cartography of consciousness. The aim is not to depict what is seen, but to fold the map and turn it inward, into the folds of mind and spirit.
Each piece in the exhibition functions as a station of the soul. They mark pauses in a continuous, unfinished journey — both personal and shared. Through painting, sculpture, video and installation, the artists invite us to join them on their spiritual journeys and share in their rituals of departure and return.
Spiritual Narrative is therefore an anthology of metamorphoses. It invites viewers to recognise their own intimate odyssey in these visual narratives and ask themselves: What maps lie folded within us? What inner home are we ultimately seeking to reach?
