Bamboo Pagoda
Reinterpreting Macau's Bamboo Scaffolding Heritage
The craft of bamboo scaffolding was included in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017, under the category of “Traditional Handicraft Skills and Techniques.” Rooted in Macau’s building culture, this traditional craft forms the starting point for the Bamboo Pagoda, an architectural installation conceived as a space for contemplation.
Built entirely from bamboo and standing approximately 13 metres tall, the temporary pavilion is located on the shore of Sai Van Lake. It serves both as a scenic viewpoint and as a place where visitors can pause, breathe, and reconnect with the urban landscape. Its elegant, tapered form rises in a lightweight, fluid silhouette, evoking the verticality of traditional pagodas and the organic qualities of bamboo as a natural material.
The location on Sai Van Lake also recalls Macau’s close relationship with water and the landscape that has shaped its development. The project brings contemporary design into dialogue with traditional construction techniques, while reflecting on the transformation of the area from its modest beginnings, closely connected to nature and water, into the vibrant urban landscape of today.
In Macau, one of the world’s most densely populated cities, the Bamboo Pagoda offers a poetic contrast: a place of tranquillity, reflection, and reconnection. It invites passers-by to experience silence, rediscover a slower rhythm, and encounter the city through a lens of care and contemplation. Suspended above the water, the structure creates a temporary refuge while reactivating intangible cultural practices rooted in spirituality, local building knowledge, and ecological awareness.
