Macao Grand Prix Museum
The first government building of Macau S.A.R. to be awarded LEED Gold certification by US Green Building Council.
The refurbished Macau Grand Prix Museum now consists of four floors with a total area of 16,000 square meters, six times as large as the previous. The museum is home to a collection of racing cars and motorbikes from past events and offers an interactive and entertaining experience for visitors to learn about the history and development of the Macau Grand Prix held annually since 1954.
Completed in 1993, the existing building required an uplift to improve the identity, functionality and experience of the GP Museum. With a focus on adaptation and interventions; the structure of the existing building is mostly retained in this refurbishment, the existing spaces were studied and repurposed to meet contemporary requirements.
Externally, the original façade remains recognisable with the concrete surfaces cladded with dark granite tiles, glazing units and curtain wall systems replaced, featured by an additional light weight cladding structure comprising metal mesh panels to the top of the building.
At ground level, the underused outdoor gallery is transformed into a new café. The layout of the ground floor is rearranged to accommodate a conference room, giftshop, display for the first Macau Grand Prix champion which sets the scene of the exhibition. The exhibition spaces on the first and second floors features a generous and meandering circulation intended to create a flow for the exhibition and at the same time resonates with the movement and speed of the race circuit suggested by the directional gesture of the ceiling.
Barrier free access was considered during the reconfiguration of the building to ensure the museum will provide an inclusive and accessible environment in the new life. The project has also achieved the gold level of LEED certification.
